The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported 17 deaths and made 490 arrests for operating a vehicle under the influence across the state during the Memorial Day weekend.
The four-day reporting period began Friday and ran through Monday. The 17 deaths are a small increase from the 15 last year.
This year, Cuyahoga County reported one death from a traffic accident, the patrol reported.
Additionally, state troopers made 26,150 enforcement stops, including 299 drug arrests. They cited 3,992 people for seat-belt citations. They made 13,249 non-enforcement contacts and helped 2,706 motorists.
“Troopers remind motorists that roadway safety is a shared responsibility,” the patrol said in a statement. “Everyone can contribute to making our roadways safer by following traffic laws, wearing safety belts and driving sober.”
