Continued fall in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations in Ohio means figures now comparable to Summer 2021: Weekly COVID roundup

by Mar 7, 2022Health, Local News

The 6,504 COVID-19 cases reported last week by the Ohio Department of Health was the lowest total for any seven-day period since July 28. Here are the daily reports for the last three weeks.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – As the calendar turns to March 2022, Ohio is seeing relevant COVID-19 figures, like newly reported cases and hospitalizations, at their lowest point since last summer. In some cases, the numbers are as low as they were before the delta variant wave hit the state.

The number of reported coronavirus cases in Ohio in the last seven days continued to shrink, down more than 2,000 week-over-week. As of Saturday, that number was 6,504, compared to 8,705 on Feb. 26. Put another way, the figure decreased about 25% from last week.

The seven-day average of cases has fallen week-over-week, from 1,244 to 929. It’s the first time the seven-day average has been this low since late July 2021.

The eight consecutive weeks of falling case numbers means the 21-day average also keeps falling, down to 1,347 from 2,123 on Feb. 26. Just one month ago, the 21-day average was 11,908.

Additionally, daily COVID hospitalizations in the state keep sliding. This week, the number of patients fell into triple digits for the first time since early August 2021. Week-over-week, the count was lower on Saturday (856) than it was on Feb. 26 (1,151); that’s a decrease of 295 patients.

The daily patient count for those being treated for COVID-19 in the ICU fluctuated throughout the week, but it was ultimately lower on Saturday (178) than it was the prior Saturday (229). That’s a difference of 51.

According to the Ohio Hospital Association, the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations is down 22% over the past seven days; down 61% in the last 21 days and down 87% in the past 60 days. As for COVID-19 ICU admissions, the figure is down 17% over the last seven days; down 61% in the past 21 days and down 87% in the last 60 days.

As of Saturday, 1-in-22 patients hospitalized in Ohio were COVID-positive, the Ohio Hospital Association’s data shows, and 1-in-17 ICU patients is COVID positive.

Unlike the case and hospitalization figures, the weekly reported COVID death count has not been very consistent. From the end of 2021 and into the early weeks of 2022, the count steadily rose. Then, it began dropping. The count now appears to be oscillating – at least week-over-week.

This week, 438 COVID-19 deaths were reported in Ohio. In the prior four weeks, the count was 1,087, 488, 788 and 1,146, respectively.

It’s worth noting that the death figures often lag for weeks or even months. Ohio reports COVID-19 deaths twice per week, on Tuesday and Fridays.

COVID-19 vaccinations continue to rise in Ohio, though incrementally. As of Saturday, 69.8% of Ohioans 12 and older have at least one shot. That is up 0.1% week-over-week. When factoring in residents 5 and up, that figure is 65.8% – also up 0.1% in the past seven days.
