Shooting victim in southwest Ohio struck by police car responding to scene, dies of injuries

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — A man wounded in a shooting was struck by a police car responding to the scene, reports say, and later died of his injuries.

Eric Eugene Cole, 42, was laying in the street after he was wounded in his left arm and shoulder in the shooting at about 11:22 p.m. Sunday, the Springfield News Sun reports. The first patrol car that arrived at the scene ran over Cole, police tell Dayton247now.com.

WDTN Channel 2 reports Cole was taken to the Springfield Regional Medical Center before being flown by helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital. Cole died of his injuries at Miami Valley.

The cause of Cole’s death has not been released, WHIO Channel 7 reports. Police also have not identified the officer who struck Cole.

WDTN reports the police department is investigating the shooting, while the State Highway Patrol is investigating the incident involving the patrol car. The News Sun reports there are no suspects in the shooting.

Reports say there is dashcam video of the incident. A news conference on the incident is scheduled for 10 a.m. today.
