CLEVELAND, Ohio— An 18-year-old woman was shot to death Thursday at an apartment complex in Cleveland’s Buckeye-Woodhill neighborhood, police said.

Police arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of murder in connection with the shooting, officials said. He also suffered a gunshot wound, police said.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner has not released the name of the woman who died.

The shooting happened about 9:45 p.m. on East 99th Place, near the intersection of Woodhill Road and Shale Avenue.

Police said witnesses called 911 and reported two groups of people shooting at each other. The shooting had stopped by the time officers arrived and saw the two groups, police said.

Investigators were not able to determine if the two groups had actually been shooting at each other, police officials said.

A witness ran inside one of the apartments, then ran out and told officers the 18-year-old woman had been shot.

Officers found her in the apartment’s kitchen with gunshots to her head, her left side and leg, according to police. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the shooting stemmed from an earlier incident, but did not provide any information about the prior incident.

Witnesses identified the shooter and officers searched the home. Police arrested the 20-year-old man after he showed up to University Hospitals to be treated for a gunshot wound to his arm, according to police.
