Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed a joint session of Congress via video feed Wednesday to urge the United States to provide arms and money to help Ukraine repel the Russian invasion. Zelenskyy called on President Joe Biden to lead.
“You are the leader of the nation, of your great nation. I wish you to be the leader of the world. Being the leader of the world means to be the leader of peace,” the Ukrainian president said. Members of Congress gave Zelenskyy a standing ovation.
In the gallery’s lead image this week, editorial cartoonist Dana Summers of Tribune Content Agency interpreted Zelenskyy’s speech as a lecture on leadership to the schoolboy Biden. A.F. Branco of Creators Syndicate draws Zelenskyy taking Biden’s seat as the leader of the free world. Michael Ramirez of the Las Vegas Review-Journal depicted Zelenskyy as a modern-day Winston Churchill and Russian leader Vladimir Putin as, well, a weasel.
Putin’s relentless attacks on Ukrainian civilians dominates the gallery this week, with entries from Phil Hands, Bill Bramhall, David Horsey, Joel Pett, Walt Handelsman and Mike Luckovich.
Other news events in the cartoons this week include ex-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s attempts to revive his political career after resigning in disgrace last year; high gas prices and inflation; and the return of Major League Baseball after an agreement to end its lockout of players.
Cartoons were drawn by Nick Anderson, Bill Bramhall, Dana Summers, Drew Sheneman, Walt Handelsman, David Horsey, Phil Hands, Joel Pett and Joey Weatherford of Tribune Content Agency; and A.F. Branco, Mike Luckovich and Michael Ramirez of Creators Syndicate.
