Caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, on Monday chaired a meeting of the Ministerial Committee tasked to address the repercussions of the financial crisis on the activity of public facilities.
The meeting, which took place at the Grand Serail, also took stock of the open strike which is being carried out by public sector employees.
“Despite the difficult financial situation of the treasury, we have sought and are still seeking to provide all the factors of steadfastness and continuity for public sector employees, who constitute the main nerve of the state,” Mikati said.
“The strike, despite its righteousness and legitimacy, is not a sustainable solution due to the fact that it paralyzes the state and stops the revenues that guarantee the improvement of social conditions, and consequently increasing salaries. Therefore, we will remain trapped in the same cycle,” Mikati explained.
“In our last meeting, we took a series of decisions that should help cope with the financial reality within the available capabilities, and we will try in today’s meeting to approach new ideas, so that we may reach a solution that’s acceptable to everyone. However, meeting the demands of public sector employees all at once is impossible and causes a broader collapse of the situation, and we do not plan to take this risk,” Mikati concluded.
