AKRON, Ohio — A 17-year-old male has died after a car lost control and went into the canal Sunday in the Middlebury neighborhood, the second fatality from the crash, police say.
A third male, age 18, remains in critical condition at Summa Health Akron City Hospital, according to police. A 25-year-old man died Sunday in the crash.
The crash occurred at about 6:12 p.m. at the intersection of Case and East Market streets, police say. The three males reportedly were in a white Saturn that was going south on Case Avenue at a high rate of speed. The Saturn ran a red light and struck a Chevy Cruze that was making a left turn north onto Case from East Market Street.
After the crash, the Saturn lost control and continued through the intersection, striking a concrete barrier and eventually crashing into the canal, police say. One of the occupants was trapped inside the car and two others were ejected into the water.
The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office and Akron police are investigating the crash. Police have not released the names of the victims.
