AKRON, Ohio — A 16-year-old girl waiting at a bus stop managed to fight off a man who grabbed her and attempted to drag her into his vehicle, police say.
According to police, the girl was at a Metro RTA bus stop on South Arlington Avenue near Neville Avenue just before 6:30 a.m. Friday. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Da Aron Jackson, reportedly parked his vehicle nearby and approached the girl, who was waiting to go to school.
Jackson walked back and forth near the girl and tried to initiate a conversation with her, police say, possibly in an attempt to distract her. Moments later, Jackson grabbed the girl from behind and tried to drag her in the direction of his car, which was parked around the corner.
The girl was able to grab hold of a chain-linked fence, which helped her break free from Jackson’s grasp, police say. Jackson reportedly took the girl’s cellphone, but then tossed it back to her before getting into his car and driving away.
The girl and her mother went to the police department at about 7:45 a.m. to report the abduction attempt. Police say officers converged on the area and began searching for Jackson’s vehicle, a white Ford Mustang. The car was spotted at about 12:30 p.m. Friday on Brown Street and Jackson was arrested without incident in the area of South Main Street and East Waterloo Road.
Jackson is being held in the Summit County Jail on a charge of abduction and also for a parole violation.
