ROCKBRIDGE, Ohio — Officials say a 45-year-old Lima man fell to his death Sunday while hiking in the Hocking Hills area.
Willard Gay was pronounced dead at the scene in in Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve just before 4 p.m. Sunday, the Lima News reports.
The Hocking County Coroner’s Office says Gay dropped something while hiking the upper rim trail at Conkles Hollow, Hometown Stations reports. He walked around a platform near a waterfall and reached for the object when he fell headfirst off the rim, officials say.
The Lima News reports that witnesses say it appears Gay lost his balance. He fell about 80 feet.
Stacey Sams, coroner and chief investigator for the coroner’s office, tells the Lima News that there usually are two to three fatal falls at the park each year.
