DAYTON, Ohio — A Lyft driver was shot and killed early Wednesday morning, apparently the victim of four juvenile suspects who had carjacked another ride-share driver just moments earlier, reports say.
Police have not released the identity of the 35-year-old male driver, who was found dead of a gunshot wound at about 2 a.m. after his car crashed into a parked car, WHIO Channel 7 reports.
WDTN Channel 2 reports that about 1 a.m., a female ride-share driver called police to report she had been robbed at gunpoint by four males. A short time later, police responded to a report of shots fired and found the male victim.
Police found the woman’s stolen vehicle parked in front of a residence and discovered the four suspects were inside, WDTN reports. Three people voluntarily exited the home, but three others refused to come out, initiating a SWAT standoff.
The suspects eventually surrendered after several hours, reports say. The four juveniles taken into custody are ages 15 and 16, WHIO reports. They each have been charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of murder.
“Its absolutely tragic. A guy just out trying to make a living. It’s a horrible situation,” Dayton police Lt. Jason Hall tells WHIO.
Lyft released a statement to WHIO and said the killing was “reprehensible.”
“Our hearts are with the driver’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time, as well as with an additional driver who was impacted by this behavior,” the statement says.
