A Parma man is charged in connection with the torching of a parking attendant booth across the street from the Justice Center during the May 30, 2020, riot in downtown Cleveland.
Seth Calig, 49, is accused in federal court in Cleveland of conspiracy to commit arson. An arraignment date has not yet been set, and court records do not list an attorney for him.
Calig was among the large group that clashed with police outside the Justice Center.
The day started off with a peaceful protest of the Minneapolis police murder of George Floyd at the Free Stamp and later descended into chaos after police and protesters clashed a few blocks away.
Calig is accused of lighting a roll of paper towels on fire and dropping it into the attendant booth in a parking lot on West 3rd Street, across the street from the Justice Center. The lot is run by Shaia’s Parking.
While he and others stood around waiting for the booth to ignite, another man, Timothy Goodner, tossed a cardboard Corona beer box inside the booth, according to the indictment.
Goodner was the first person convicted in federal court on charges stemming from the riot. Goodner, 21, died four days after he failed to appear for his April 5 sentencing. It’s unclear how Goodner died.
Calig is the sixth person charged in federal court stemming from the damage in downtown Cleveland. Two federal cases were dismissed, and three ended in convictions.
Dozens of others were charged in state and city courts, though many of those charges were either dismissed or reduced.
