For the first time in six weeks, the weekly number of COVID-19 cases in Ohio has dropped.
The state of Ohio on Thursday reported 27,785 new cases of COVID-19 in its weekly dashboard update, down 2,091 from a week ago.
Ohio has been over 10,000 cases per week, every week since the beginning of May. Cases had been rising steadily since mid June when the weekly new cases were 16,169, peaking for the summer last week at 29,876.
This week’s case total averages to about 3,969 cases per day over seven days. That’s lower than last week by about 298 cases per day.
Total reported COVID-19 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic were 39,133.
The total COVID-19 case count since early 2020 has now reached 2,976,027.
A total of 7,419,934 Ohioans have received at least one vaccination, representing about 63% of Ohioans.
Since the beginning of 2021, there have been 24,195 deaths among people reported as unvaccinated, and 1,317 among people reported to be fully vaccinated. And there have been 73,025 hospitalized Ohioans who were not fully vaccinated, and 5,273 fully vaccinated people hospitalized.
The state does not report for COVID-19 cases whether people were vaccinated.
The total cases being reported recently likely are understated, as some people do not report at-home tests and others may not be testing at all.
