Shots were fired into a crowd during a large memorial gathering Wednesday evening in the North Hill neighborhood, leaving one person dead and sending two others to the hospital in what police are calling a “senseless event.”
A 30-year-old man died after he was driven from the scene on the 800 block of Wall Street by a private vehicle to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center. Another 30-year-old man and a 19-year-old man were taken to Summa Health Akron City Hospital. Police say their wounds are not life-threatening.
The shots were reported just before 6 p.m. Wednesday, police say. “When (officers) arrived, they learned there were three shooting victims impacted by this senseless event,” police say in a news release.
During the vigil, an unknown suspect or suspects approached the group and opened fire before fleeing the scene, police say. Investigators believe someone in the crowd might have returned fire.
The identity of the man killed and the other victims are being withheld by police pending identification and family notification.
